New this year, art will introduce "participation points" as a way to assess student engagement! What are Participation Points? Participation points are a "snapshot" indicator of a students' willingness to create a productive learning environment by 1) answering questions when called upon, 2) following directions/ask for clarification when directions are unclear, 3) raising hands during instruction, 4) having all necessary supplies ready for class and 5) following our social distancing guidelines (in-person learners only). How often are Participation Points given? Participation points will likely be given on class days where there is not a product grade (project) due. Why does my student have a deduction to the Participation Points? Participation points will be deducted when students fail to create a condusive learning environment. A verbal warning will be given before point(s) are deducted. Single points will be taken away, after the warning, per infraction of the points listed above.

ART ON A CARTWhat a wonderful thing to get to say! That's right, we are headed back to Mother Catherine Academy on Tuesday, August 25th. We have taken every precaution to keep our in-school learners safe and I am excited for the opportunity to "push-in" to classrooms on a cart this fall.
Pushing in to classrooms minimizes cross-contamination exposure risk and allows students to stay isolated in their "pod" throughout the day. Because we cannot share supplies, students are limited to the supplies on their MCA School Supply List. It is crucial that both in school and at home learners have all their required supplies ready for each lesson. At home learners will "Zoom" in to their class at the regularly scheduled art time to listen to the lesson and then complete the assignments at their own pace afterward. Finished work can be photographed and uploaded to either Class Dojo (PK-2) or the students own Art Google Classroom. Please reach out to our Home Learning Liason, Lynn Hudak, via email if you are having technology issues and need assistance. I've just added a new platform for sharing all of your fantastic artwork while we are away from school: our own Instagram account. Have your parents/guardians upload something cool, fun and creative that you've been up to to https://www.instagram.com/mrsgavinssmartestartists/
I can't wait to hear from you! Well, this isn't quite what we expected, is it? Let's make the most of a bad situation by spending time with family and doing what we love. I love art and I love learning. I've assembled some resources for you on my "Remote Work" page so that you have places to go online to continue learning and growing in art. If you see something online that you'd like me to add, please let me know and I will add it to the list. Likewise, if a link I posted doesn't go where it should, let me know and I will figure out what's going on! In the meantime, let's look forward to learning and growing in new ways, taking time to do things we have put off for too long, and anticipate when we can all be together again! XXOO, Mrs. Gavin
The first quarter of art at MCA is under our belt! In PK-5 we have focused on LINE and started our explorations into COLOR. Our middle school completed their introductory project and are forging into their individual ELEMENTS review projects.
If you haven't been into the school lately, come on in and check out the beautiful projects hanging in the hallways leading to the art room. Were you wondering why your student got the grade they did on their report card? Check out this summary of grading expectations here. Remember, generous opportunities for make up work are available prior to the end of each marking period: all you have to do is ASK! Middle school students will have an unannounced "supply check" before the beginning of November. Participation / process points will only be awarded to those students who can show the supply on that day. Not sure if your student has all the required supplies? Check this list:
Please come visit us at Mother Catherine Academy during our next Open House, Sunday, August 12, 2018 from 1-3 p.m.
